Map: Keep Building Public Housing!

In communities, towns and cities all over the country - the Government has paused, downsized, reconsidered or cancelled Kāinga Ora developments, while 22,000 households wait for a home. The Government must resource Kāinga Ora to build more and better public housing to house the people!

Here is a link to the map of the paused Kāinga Ora developments (or just use the one above). There is a text version of the map available in this guide on pages 3-19. The map only shows Kāinga Ora developments which intended to have 10 or more houses built, but there are many more paused developments. Some of these developments are on land that already had state housing on it, families living there. Homes that were demolished, and people pushed out. It is a deep injustice to not keep building public housing.

Zoom into where you live and see if there are paused developments near you. Take action today to call on the Government to keep building public housing:

  1. Email your local MP and let them know that you want to see everyone in your community housed and that means ensuring the Government keeps building public housing. Check out the guide for details about each of the developments or click on a public housing development on the map to see the local MP’s details. In the guide you will find a template to support you in emailing your local MP.

  2. If you’re up for it, go to the stalled development in your community and take a picture of the empty land or boarded up housing to add to the map and send this through to

Send through the picture and the name of the street to publichousingfutures@gmail.com

Note: Only take a picture if the housing is boarded up or the land is empty. In some cases, tenants have been pushed out and homes demolished, but in other cases these homes are currently tenanted. Some of these developments might have been assessed already by Kāinga Ora and will continue to be built; we will do our best to update the map as we learn more.

  3. If you’re feeling energised, print and post up a poster in your community or near the development

Here’s a folder with a poster. If you would like a specific poster made for your community/region, get in touch: publichousingfutures@gmail.com

  • Download a poster

  • Post it up in your community

  • Send a picture to publichousingfutures@gmail.com and post it up on social media with the hashtag #peopleforpublichousing #keepbuildingpublichousing.
